The first annual Loop Safari Gravel Series came to a thrilling conclusion at Vipingo Ridge, leaving a trail of dust, laughter, and unforgettable memories.

The final leg of the series was a gruelling yet exhilarating test for cyclists, pushing them to their limits on the scenic Kenyan course.

The event was powered by Loop. Savage Wilderness took the lead on the course and the community was engaged by Team Amani. Vipingo Ridge was proud to be the venue for the fourth event in the series, following starting in Tatu City, onto Hells Gate and then Iten.

Registration was at the Vipingo Ridge Beach Club on Friday 23rd August, where guests received their race packs, had lunch and a dip in the sea ahead the big day on Saturday 24th August.

Champions Crowned at the Thrilling Conclusion of the Loop Safari Gravel Series

The well organised race included 3 different distance loops, with the start and finish at Vipingo Ridge. Cyclists signed up in advance to compete in the 20km, 60km or 120km race, with over 250 competitors coming out for the Coast edition. There was also a kids race as well that was within Vipingo Ridge.

We’re thrilled to congratulate Jordan Schleck and Aleper Mary on taking the top spots in the men’s and women’s elite categories respectively. Schleck dominated the race, finishing with a time of 4:40:50hrs, while Mary conquered the course in 6:26:16hrs. Their perseverance and skill were truly inspiring.

But the champions weren’t the only ones who deserve recognition. The entire event was a testament to the dedication and hard work of all the participants. The camaraderie amongst the riders was fantastic, and everyone who crossed the finish line achieved a personal victory.

Victorious cycling teams

Speaking of victories, a big shoutout goes to the Black Mamba team for taking home the overall series team prize of Kshs. 250,000. Their teamwork and strategic riding throughout the series were truly impressive.

The Black Mamba team are supported by corporate business LOOP and NCBA, who were proactive at the prizegiving in inviting and challenges other corporate businesses to support grass roots cycling. By adopting and sponsoring cycling teams, the aim is the whole sport is transformed and grows.

Sustainability and giving back

This year’s Loop Safari Gravel Series wasn’t just about competition; it was also about celebrating our love for cycling and the stunning Kenyan landscape.

The race incorporated a tree-planting initiative, and the entire event fostered a strong sense of community spirit. Spectators and the cyclists supported the native tree planting, lead by LOOP CEO Eric Muriuki Njagi who was joined by Vipingo Ridge CEO Alex Horsey, there were 200 indegenious trees planted on Saturday. Our experienced Vipingo Ridge landscaping team will continue to care for these young trees and we thank LOOP and the Safari Gravel Series for leaving their mark at the Ridge.

Another way the event gave back is through community engagement. With a 120km ambitions for the cycling course we knew the local community would need to help the race organisers to bring the event to life. The Local Chiefs and Village Elders were supportive and jobs were created for almost 50 members of the local community who acted as marshalls and sweepers for the event. On social media there are videos of wonderful engagement with the cyclists from local children watching the excitement of the race.

We at Vipingo Ridge are incredibly proud to have been a part of this exciting series. It was an amazing experience to witness the talent, sportsmanship, and passion of all the participants.
