Social and Sustainability Responsibility Highlights 2024
Vipingo Ridge have a number of Community engagement and sustainability initiatives. We were founded on the promise of giving back and providing tangible improvements to the community. The work we do is across a number of different ecological projects and social endeavours.
Here are a few highlights of the activities undertaken in 2024.
1. Community Engagement and Education
These activities focus on involving the community in engaging and experience building opportunities, particularly for young people, as well as supporting the community in times of need. Some examples of this work in 2024:
Facilitated 7 internships and 1 job opportunity for Tewa Technical Training Institute students, fostering skill development and career readiness.
Hosted over 350 students and local leaders during the Magical Kenya Ladies European Tour, including a golf clinic for 35 students.
Organized an educational experience for 40 Takaungu Secondary School students on giraffe conservation during World Giraffe Day.
Provided firewood to 184 community members from 13 villages, 5 staff and 1 women’s group, cooking oil to village elders, water for assistant chief’s inaugural ceremony, and 84 jerricans for water storage across 7 villages.
Supported Vipingo Central Primary School students with lunch funding during the 2024 music festivals.
Hosted 200 students at the MotoX event in December, experiencing a thrilling event with over 500 guests.
2. Sustainability and Economic Empowerment
We work in the UN Frameworks of empowerment of the community for sustainable change, and aim to create opportunities for the community in a number of key ways:
Created income opportunities for 15 women through fruit and broom harvesting for sale.
Offered rotational casual employment to over 70 locals, ensuring fair distribution of income.
Engaged 40 marshals and 5 motorcycle riders from 13 villages for the LOOP Cycling Event.
Raised funds through a homeowners’ Treasure Hunt on 11th May 2024 to support Gongoni Primary School with essential school supplies and health services including eye tests for hundreds of children.
Celebrated World Environment Day (5th June) with county officials through a walk and clean-up initiative, promoting conservation.
Marked World Oceans Day (8th June) by supporting and promoting Oceans Alive conservation and community projects.
Led a beach cleanup on Mazingira Day (10th October) with local CBOs, addressing marine pollution and protecting ecosystems.
Developed eco-policies aligning Vipingo Ridge operations with SDGs, including Environmental, Waste Management, Sustainability, Sustainable Purchasing, and Safeguarding policies.
3. Youth and Sports Development
Trained 60 pupils from five schools in golf fundamentals through the Junior Golf Clinic Program.
Supported local golfer Tatiana in five major tournaments in Nairobi and the Coast Region.
Donated six soccer balls to the Football Kenya Federation to sustain youth sports activities.
Worked closely with Naomi Wafula to create opportunities for personal development, golf tourism promotion and opportunities to mentor local young people.
4. Employee Empowerment and Development
The team of Vipingo Ridge have been engaged in a number of enriching activities this year, with aim of creating a motivated cohesive team.
Celebrated International Women’s Day, highlighting gender equality and inclusivity by celebrating the women of Vipingo Ridge
Delivered transformative customer service training during Customer Service Week in October.
Partnered with WellCare Medical Center in October 2024 to conduct Breast Cancer Awareness Training and Onsite Screening for staff.
IT training through certified Google Business Partner.
Energy awareness training focused on improving the understanding of measurement and the impact of energy consuming habits, processes and tools in order to help Vipingo Ridge consume less energy and be more efficient and energy concious.
5. Strategic Conservation Partnerships
Partnered with Oceans Alive to provide hands-on CSR opportunities for clients and guests benefiting the environment and local communities through climate smart kitchen gardens and coral restoration programs.
Supported Oceans Alive by providing in-kind support through complimentary use of the Beach Club terrace, enhancing the success of the 1st LIFT Network Convening and Donor visits.
Collaborated with local CBOs like Kilifi Innovation Hub (World Environment Day), Kuruwitu Youth Conservation CBO, and Bureni Conservation Group (Mazingira Day beach cleanup), strengthening conservation efforts and community engagement.
Partnered with the County Government of Kilifi to promote environmental conservation awareness and sustainability on World Environmental Day 2024.
Close collaboration with our Wildlife partners continued throughout 2024 including Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association and the Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI).
Received the Director General of Kenya Foresteries to assess our progress on our tree planting and engage in fruitful discussions on future work together.
We have made to good progress in 2024, but aim to make to even greater strides in 2025. Thank you to all of our partners that have supported this journey, and to our Members and Homeowners for their commitment to a greener future together with our community.
