World Giraffe Day

World Giraffe Day is each 21st June, and this year is particularly special as it marks 10 years since the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) established this day to raise awareness of this vulnerable species.

Members and visitors to Vipingo Ridge have a special relationship with the tallest animal on the planet, as though the three resident giraffes are still not fully grown, our ‘towers of Vipingo Ridge’ are the tallest of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) animals at Vipingo Ridge.

Activities for World Giraffe Day

With our partners Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS), Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK), Wildlife Research and Training Insitiute (WRTI), Pwani Ecosystem Conservancies Foundation (PECFO) and the Kilifi County Government we will be hosting an interactive and educational session at the Sundowner for World Giraffe Day.

We will be joined by 20 teenagers from local Takaungu Secondary School, who are members of their school’s Wildlife Club (of the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya program) and the start of a new partnership for Vipingo Ridge and WCK. As well as this group of engaged young people, it is an opportunity for our Members to learn more about giraffes and our own Vipingo Ridge journey with our rescue Giraffes.

9:00AM Arrivals and refreshments.
10:00AM
Welcome and Introductions to the Giraffe story and World Giraffe Day panelist discussion (listen in as we will be asking questions).
11:00AM
Fun interactive quiz in teams about giraffes and the conservation journey at Vipingo Ridge (prizes to be won!).
11:30AM
Opportunity to see the giraffes of Vipingo Ridge who will be in their habitat but close enough for pictures and guests to see them (strictly no touching, loud noises or unsafe behaviour permitted).
12:00PM
Prize giving and departures.

The Sundowner will be open from midday with our usual Pizza menu and drinks.

We are not charging for this event but request a donation to our partners Reteti (who rescued and facilitated the original introduction of the giraffes at Vipingo Ridge) for members and guests wishing to join.

Prior registration required for us to prepare for guest numbers and facilitate at the Main Gate.

Disclaimer: Vipingo Ridge is a Wildlife Sanctuary and the animals are wild. As part of our conservation work we encourage them to roam free with limited human contact. Please respect the animals, and follow all instructions from our trained Rangers and Security officers for a fun and safe experience for all. Vipingo Ridge Limited is not liable for any animal encounter incidents or accidents.
