Kuruwitu Marine Conservation Project

Vipingo Ridge includes land elevated on the ridge and waterfront real estate. This ocean side property is the venue for the Vipingo Ridge Beach Club, a restaurant, bar and water sports centre.

But there’s more. We’re also the headquarters of an exciting partnership of organisations that are truly making a difference to our marine habitats and the local community. From their offices, community shop, a coral workshop and community kitchen garden, there’s more than meets the eye at the Vipingo Ridge Beach Club.

Conservation Partners

In 2003 our partners and founders of Non-Government Organisation (NGO) Oceans Alive Trust worked with the community to form the Kuruwitu Conservation and Welfare Community Based Organisation (KCW-CBO). This was a pioneering step creating the first Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA).

This award winning project inspires many coastal projects as a model for community-led, sustainable marine conservation. The project area now covers a 100 km2 Co-Managed Area (CMA).

Healthy community, healthy ocean

Oceans Alive have a number of marine conservation projects ranging from coral reforestation, education, beach clean ups and turtle protection. All of these are underpinned by their extensive experience and work with the community.

The Oceans Alive team also focus on the role and empowerment of women in the fishing community, working to create sustainable food management systems.

This is particularly important as the seas can only be fished 6 months of the year, and for creating more balanced diets for those poorest members of the Kilifi community that struggle to feed their families. This work happens in the Kitchen Garden at the Beach Club.

Experience the best snorkelling on the Kenyan coast

Vipingo Ridge is delighted to partner with Oceans Alive Trust and the Kuruwitu Conservation and Welfare CBO, offering education and experiences of this incredible habitat to our members and guests.

From guided reef walks and snorkelling safaris, our partners based at the Beach Club enable you to experience the rich and diverse habitat.

We also have a wide range of water-based activities from boat trips, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.
