Fridays for Future at our Wildlife Sanctuary
The Fridays for Future Movement kicks off at Vipingo Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary
The global climate action initiative, Fridays for Future, founded by Greta Thunberg in 2018, was officially launched at Vipingo Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary on Friday 31 st January 2025.
This movement is dedicated to promoting a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable planet through regular activities such as cleanups, tree planting, awareness campaigns, and policy advocacy.
Our 1st Initiative: A Cleanup at ‘The Bowl’
Last Friday, our wildlife team led by the Conservation Coordinator conducted a cleanup activity at The Bowl, so named due to its topography. Set within the walled 2,000 acres this has recently been a breeding site for various wildlife species within the Vipingo Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary. The focus of this initiative was to address one of the most pressing environmental threats; plastic pollution.
Why a Cleanup?
Plastic waste poses a significant risk to wildlife and ecosystems worldwide, and our Wildlife Sanctuary is no exception:
Wildlife can mistake plastics for food, leading to choking, intestinal blockages, and fatal health issues.
Animals can become trapped or injured by plastic waste, hindering their ability to move and forage freely.
In Coastal Kenya’s hot and humid climate, plastics break down into microplastics, seeping into the soil, reducing its fertility, and contaminating essential ecosystems that wildlife depend on for survival.
A Step Towards a Sustainable Future
Every piece of plastic removed from our sanctuary represents a step toward safeguarding biodiversity and maintaining a thriving ecosystem. Through this movement, we aim to protect our wildlife and set an example for sustainable conservation.
A Call to Action
We invite everyone to join us in this journey of environmental stewardship. There are almost 2,000 people working and living at Vipingo Ridge and if everyone plays their part to not drop litter, recycle and be more mindful of their plastic use, we will truly make a difference.
By working together, we ensure that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier planet.
